Jefferson designed the primary residence following neoclassical design principles espoused by Andrea Palladio, a Renaissance architect, as well as incorporating many of his own thoughts.  There are several other buildings on the property serving various functions as well as fields for tobacco and other crops.  Throughout his lifetime, Jefferson continued to work on the building’s design as well as his experiments in breeding new plants.
